Saturday: this was the day of the holiday party I was complaining about in another venue.
…what was Breakfast? Ah, Saturday I typically make an omelet (weekends I have standby’s that are a little more complicated than weekdays or a little more fancy…if you consider Eggo waffles on Sunday fancy…than weekdays. So, lessee, I made an omelet from two eggs and one egg equivalent of Egg beaters, sliced up apple chicken sausage link, onions, ‘shrooms, and yellow bell pepper. Slice of raisin toast with honey-cinnamon butter, and coffee.
Lunch/dinner….we had a late breakfast and were embroiled in de-Christmasing the outside of the house that day, so lunch was put off and put off until basically it was an hour before the holiday party (the one we had to drive 45 minutes to get to, through mountains). Himself was unclear whether this party, which ran 6-9:00, was going to consist of finger-foods, or some sort of actual meal, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but at that point I didn’t want to show up hungry and end up ‘garbage-gutting’ on nasty stuff, so we got dressed and went to the local coffee shop ca 5:00 and had Panini sandwiches (meat and cheese on grilled, buttered bread), an apple apiece and split a large sugar-free gingerbread latte. It occurred to me while eating it, that this was essentially dinner, and possibly not the best substitute for the greasy food I was trying to avoid at the party. Well, come to think of it, it was the perfect substitute…. In retrospect, we should've just split one sandwich and one apple and that would have sufficed us on our trip and to make us not ravenous when we arrived. I wish we just could have gone home from there—neither of us were into it, and Himself had slipped on the stairs earlier and either broken his toe or at least jammed it really badly, but we soldiered on.
Dinner—yup, turns out they had BOTH finger foods AND a sit-down type buffet of sorts. Great. So, I guess more like "Second Dinner."Well, I avoided all the dips and things and had a plate from the buffet---full-serve, not self-serve, including a slice of pork loin (kinda dry), six of those mini meatballs in sauce that you tend to find on hot hors douevres lines, and a couple bites from a ladle-full of potatoes au-gratin (but with that nasty bright yellow commercial sauce) that was plunked on my plate, a small glass of red wine, and split a square of cheesecake with Himself.
Needless to say, I did not lose weight that day.
I think I’m going to start mentioning whether I make it to the gym or walking..b/c the lack of doing so more than once a week since Thanksgiving is likely part of my problem, and perhaps NOT sitting on my ass most of the day and lying on the sofa most of the night could be part of the solution.
Sunday:
Brunch (b/c we slept in way late--I doubt we ate before noon) 2 nutri-grain Eggo waffles with a compote made from pecans and dried cranberries sautéed in a little butter, then mixed and simmered with a splash of apple cider and faux maple syrup. 4 slices of turkey bacon (these are, I think, 35 cals apiece and mostly lean protein) Half a grapefruit, coffee with creamer
Snack: handful of smoked almonds and dark-chocolate covered espresso beans
Dinner: Soup -- one of our fave soup “meals”—other than my own homemade is to mix a can of Amy’s Tomato Bisque with Amy’s Lentil soup (you can do same combination with Progresso and Campbell’s Healthy Choice); then I like to doctor it up with extra pepper, garlic powder, and often, if it’s dinner rather than lunch, some sort of meat—chopped turkey-roni is nice, and this time I used a turkey sausage with sun-dried tomato that’s also great on pizza; large side salad, three of those whole-grain, long Wasa crackers, two with cheese, and one with hummus; 4 oz of red wine.
Monday:
Breakfast: Bowl of Kashi hi protein cereal w/ skim milk, teaspoon of milled flaxseed (to increase fiber and omega 3) and blueberries; 2 pieces of turkey bacon (Himself cooked up the whole package, as usual, on Sunday, then we put the rest in a baggie in the fridge and take out a couple pieces at a time during the week until we run out—saves time on weekday mornings), coffee with creamer.
Lunch—a large salad from the grocery store salad bar (lettuce and veggies topped with edamame and garbanzo beans, some chunks of faux crab, and grilled chicken, and a spoonful of lobster salad (w/ some sort of sour cream or similar I’m sure), took it home and used my own light balsamic vinaigrette. Chocolate chip cookie.
Gym—half an hour doing cardio program on treadmill
Dinner—steamed frozen veggie mix (I think this was onion, zucchini and summer squash, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower, then mixed with a can of diced tomatoes with chilis; two black bean veggie burgers sliced on top, ¼ cup lower fat shredded Mexican-style cheeses (this is from a bag o’ cheese) and about two tablespoons of pre-made guac. This is a popular one-bowl quick meal at our house.
Dessert: ½ cup lite ice cream
Woke up this morning having gained ANOTHER pound. WTF???? I am now looking to lose 7 pounds. See…this is what is so discouraging to me. I think I eat relatively well, and relatively moderately. I have fallen off the exercise wagon, yes. I ate a little more profligately than normal over the holidays, yes. A pound or two over the holidays, sure. Maintaining, not losing, fine, I get it. But FOR GOD’S SAKE I SHOULDN’T BE STEADILY GAINING WEIGHT ON THIS!!!
The week will continue after the CLICK!
Tuesday:
Breakfast: Oatmeal: package of lower sugar Quaker oatmeal mix, peaches and cream flavor, with an added tbs of oat bran and ½ tbs of milled flaxseed and made with skim milk and a dash of creamer, blueberries on top of the oatmeal, and 2 pieces of turkey-bacon.
Morning snack—another cup of coffee and a chocolate chip cookie. I mean…why not? Seems like I’m gonna gain weight whether I eat an apple or a cookie, so what the hell?
Lunch--protein shake made with skim milk
Exercise--1/2 hour walk-jog on treadmill and some weight-machines at the gym. (I'll really be glad when more New Year's Resolutionists...other than me....are less gung-ho and the gym is less crowded)
Dinner--large dinner salad: oh-so-convenient bag o salad, shrooms, green pepper, olives, topped with chunks of chicken breast sauteed in olive oil with garlic and a spritz of lemon, also a sprinkle of feta cheese (maybe two tbs?) and low-fat balsamic vinaigrette. 1/2 a piece of naan bread (Himself had the other half); 4 oz red wine (finishing the bottle that was open). Dessert: 1/2 cup Edy's lite ice-cream
Wednesday:
Breakfast: Bowl of Kashi hi protein cereal w/ skim milk, teaspoon of milled flaxseed (to increase fiber and omega 3) and blueberries; 2 pieces of turkey bacon (that's it--will have to cook up sausage or egg for protein tomorrow), coffee with creamer.
Lunch: leftover Mexican veg and tomato mix from the other night, with some sliced leftover rotisserie chicken breast. Whole-grain Wasa cracker with Laughing Cow cheese spread.
Exercise: an hour walk-jog in the park--fortunately the sidewalks were all clear and it was relatively balmy today.
Dinner: Himself is having a company dinner meeting tonight. I don't feel like cooking for one, so I'm going to have a complete reprise of the garlic-chicken dinner salad (w/ leftover chicken) that we had last night--good thing it's so tasty! No wine though, 1/2 of the other Naan loaf.
Thursday:
Breakfast--hard-poached egg mashed up with some salt and pepper (I remember this method of serving egg since my tiniest toddler-hood when I suppose I had to have things mashed, but I've liked it ever since), mixed in some slices of turkey breakfast sausage. Slice of cinammon-raisin toast with honey-cinnamon butter (need to get more of this at the Dutch Market). Coffee. Looking back on this now, I realize there were no fruits or veggies...I was in a hurry....doh!
Lunch: the two cans of Spirutein protein shake mix I ordered arrived last night, so I had the cappuccino flavor made with milk and a dash of coffee left over from this morning, and blended with ice to be super-thick. Apple on the side.
Snack: 8 oz of V-8 (trying to make up for this morning), tbs of dark chocolate espresso beans (I've decided that "handful" might not be the best measurement for things I tend to want to mindlessly gnosh on)
to be cont.....

How do you hard-poach an egg? I have never done this before.
If you freaked out over your pound, you'd have gone on a postal rampage if you'd been me the other day. We ate dinner at La Parilla after I'd had something scandalous for lunch at work - I can't remember what, exactly, but it was huge - and I had three chicken flautas with rice and beans and tons of chips - you know how it goes. Anyway, I weighed when I got up the next morning, since I do that every now and then, and I had gained three pounds overnight. I'm used to gaining water during the day - I always weigh more before bed than in the mornings, so I weigh in the mornings if I do it at all. But three pounds in one day did seem rather excessive.
I like your focus on going to the gym, too - it's one of those things that you just have to do.
